Steve Wilkinson
Disability Issues Trainer

Steve was born in 1953 in Newcastle upon Tyne and was diagnosed with Spina Bifida. Throughout Steve’s life he has sought to ensure equality of opportunity for disabled people and has publicly spoken about living with a disability for many years. As a trainer in this area of social care and health Steve is in the unique position to appreciate the needs of disabled people from personal experience and from working with others.

Steve has completed training in Neuro Linguistic Programming and in delivering teaching to adult learners in Disability issues, IT and basic skills. Steve has been training adults for over 15 years. He also works part-time for Gateshead Council as Management Information and Research Officer in the Aiming High for Disabled Children Programme.

In March 2009, Steve co-launched A1 Speakers, a Toastmasters International Speakers Club in Newcastle, which helps people develop their communication and leadership skills. Steve is currently President of this club, which is the only chartered Toastmasters International Club in the North East of England.

Steve’s "can do" approach to life means that he has taken on inspirational challenges and raised thousands for local charities. He has abseiled from the Tyne Bridge, fire walked (on his hands) and done a marathon parasail on Humberside. As Steve says "If anyone tells me I can't do something, it's like waving a "Red Rag To A Bull" and I'm inspired to show I can".

Steve’s training is both educational and inspirational as the following quotes will testify:

"I would unreservedly recommend him to any business where a healthy dose of inspiration and motivation are required."

Tom Fenwick-Brown, Managing Director, Sandler Training

"Steve gave a presentation to the Disability Liaison Officers from the Prisons in the North East to raise awareness of wheelchair users and access. His presentation was very effective, informative, interactive and fun, whilst at the same time delivering a very important message. Every one of the delegates present stated that Steve’s presentation is one of the best they have seen"

Jo Tate, Area Diversity Lead, North East Area HM Prison Service

"Steve is a very passionate speaker who moved and motivated everyone there. He was a tough act to follow; so we asked him back to speak at a number of our launches around the country!"

Linda Holland, National Project Manager, Leonard Cheshire Disability
